Since Quake is scheduled to be coming out on the Amiga soon I thought that this guide to the basics of Quake Multiplayer and Single Player was befitting.
I have been playing Quake on the PC for quite a while. I don't claim to be any good but I know the basics and I can usually rack up some frags.
The Basics-
Control Method- OK I think we should start with one of the most important aspects of playing Quake; the method of control. There is more then a fair bit of controversy about this but I would say that in general the best control method is a combination of keyboard and mouse. Some will tell you about fancy joysticks with hundreds of little buttons whilst others argue that the best approach is through the use of nothing more then the keyboard.
I have tried all of the above approaches and although I guess it's fair to say different methods may suit different people I have found that the 'mouser' approach is the easiest route to where the frags are. I find that a three button trackball mouse is best with one button set to move forward, one to attack and one to move forward. I set the keyboard up so that C and V are the strafe keys, B to jump, alt to cycle through the weapons and space as another attack button.
Another handy setup is to bind all of the number keys to the impulses 1-9.
